First Light: Pride in Syracuse, Year-Round

Kevin Bailey, Founder of Come Out Central New York, in the First Light mini-documentary.

Pride is more than a moment. It’s a movement - and one that lives every day here in Central New York.

I was honored to collaborate with Visit Syracuse on First Light: Pride in Syracuse, Year-Round, a new mini-documentary exploring the story behind the First Light Pride Flag and its creator, Eric Hart. More than just a symbol, this flag represents Syracuse’s commitment to inclusion, love, and visibility - not only in June, but 365 days a year.

The video highlights the power of community and the importance of creating public symbols that affirm LGBTQ+ people in our daily lives. It features voices from our local queer community, including Anne and Michelle from Lezbein Syracuse, artist and activist Jaleel Campbell, and myself, sharing why this flag matters and what it means to see it fly proudly above our city.

I’m grateful to Visit Syracuse for investing in this project and continuing to tell stories that celebrate who we are.
